HRA alumnus Zack Caulford ’25 receives a collegiate scholarship at the Peninsula Sports Club’s 2025 Headliner’s Night
Hampton Roads Academy excels at producing not only outstanding scholars, but also well-rounded leaders who are prepared to contribute to their communities in a myriad of ways. Recent graduate Zack Caulford ’25 showcased the impressive accomplishments and exceptional qualities of the Academy’s alumni when he was awarded a competitive collegiate scholarship at the Peninsula Sports Club’s 75th Annual Headliner’s Night the evening of June 23.
Supporting his studies in the coming year at Florida Southern College, the scholarship recognizes Caulford’s achievements in varsity athletics as well as academics, character, leadership, and service. Through hard work and boundless energy, Caulford has for years embodied precisely the ideals this award is meant to honor. He has channeled his love of sports into driving positive change in his community, at HRA and beyond.
Zack Caulford ’25 celebrates his prestigious scholarship with his mother, Lower School music teacher Erika Caulford
Caulford, a Navigator since Pre-Kindergarten and the son of HRA Lower School music teacher Erika Caulford and Director of Technology Will Caulford, has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to the Academy and its athletics program. Across 12 seasons, he has distinguished himself on HRA’s basketball, soccer, and track & field teams.
On the basketball court, he quickly made his mark as a freshman shooting guard, earning the Polaris Award for his incredible effort and leadership. He similarly set himself apart as a soccer player. Starting at right back in his freshman year, he soon became the backbone of his team’s defense as center back. In his senior year, his leadership and talent on the pitch earned him a second Polaris Award, as well as the honor of being selected as a First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State player.
Caulford’s long record of contributions to HRA track & field included strong performances in 400-meter and 800-meter races and relays in his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. As a senior, he faced an unexpected hurdle when an injury prevented him from committing to running as he had in the past. Never faltering in his passion for the sport and his dedication to his team, Caulford demonstrated remarkable resilience and shifted his focus to throwing rather than walking away from the track.
Caulford’s devotion to athletics and his skill and generosity as a leader have allowed him to make an impact well beyond the practices and matches to which he dedicated so much time and energy. Just as committed to service as to team sports, he has labored since his time in HRA’s Middle School to benefit his community through philanthropic athletic activities.
One of his proudest achievements is his work on behalf of Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization that provides free, life-changing cleft surgeries and comprehensive care to children around the world. To support this important mission, Caulford has coached and refereed a major charity dodgeball tournament. In fall 2024, he planned and hosted a community-wide cornhole tournament that raised an impressive $15,000 for the organization.
Most recently, Caulford organized a student leadership workshop open to the entire Hampton Roads community. At this event, he shared what he had learned as an athlete and student at HRA in order to guide others in making a difference outside the classroom and the athletic field.
The Peninsula Sports Club college scholarship is a well-deserved reward for Caulford’s years of outstanding success while at HRA. It is also an acknowledgment of his readiness to apply the skills he honed through his studies and through sports to ethical leadership in the wider world—a testament to the excellence that a holistic education at HRA makes possible. The Academy could not be prouder of this pillar of the Class of 2025.
For his own part, Caulford is quick to give credit to the teammates, classmates, teachers, and coaches who helped him achieve all that he has as a Navigator. Through a long academic and athletic career at HRA, he said, “I have been able to develop and grow up with a close-knit community that has supported me every step of the way.”
]]>In 1958, a group of visionary parents set the groundwork for HRA. Recognizing a need for an independent, nonsectarian secondary school on Virginia’s Peninsula, they gathered at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and mapped out the vision of a school that would welcome diverse students. Just a year later, in 1959, Hampton Roads Academy officially opened with an inaugural class of 60 students. With a 72-acre campus purchased at what was predicted to become a central location near Interstate 64, HRA became a beacon for families seeking a premier education in Newport News and neighboring areas, including Williamsburg and Gloucester.
From the start, our mission was clear: to create a community where students could grow intellectually, morally and creatively. Today, that mission remains as vibrant as ever.
Since its founding, HRA has embraced growth and change. The journey from those first 60 students to today’s comprehensive Pre-K-12 school reflects decades of expansion and innovation. In 1961, the first class graduated, marking a proud milestone for our community. In the 1960s and 1970s, our campus facilities expanded, with the addition of a multipurpose room, faculty housing, gymnasium and an expanded library. As enrollment grew, HRA developed a robust program that included academics, arts, athletics and a commitment to service.
By the 1980s, HRA was well established as a distinguished college preparatory school, earning full accreditation from the Virginia Board of Education. Our campus was continually enhanced to provide students with more resources, including a new arts and sciences wing in 1992. Over the years, more buildings were added, partnerships were formed and a strong tradition of volunteerism and philanthropy took root in our community.
At Hampton Roads Academy, success is defined by the accomplishments of our students, not only academically but also artistically, physically and morally. Our mission is to foster an inclusive, compassionate community where students are encouraged to push their boundaries, take risks and learn from failure. Through a focus on both academic and personal growth, HRA strives to equip students with the skills they need to excel in higher education and life beyond.
Our strategic plan reinforces this mission. We prioritize excellence in academics and experiential learning opportunities across Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. We nurture a culture of curiosity, creativity and critical thinking to ensure our students become well-rounded individuals ready to contribute to an interconnected world. Our curriculum emphasizes college preparation, character development and a global perspective.
Hampton Roads Academy’s dynamic program is designed to engage students in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Through a combination of academic rigor, athletic participation and a robust array of extracurriculars, we instill honor, integrity and a sense of service. Our commitment to STEM education, the arts and hands-on learning cultivates well-rounded, effective communicators who can navigate a global landscape.
Our faculty play a central role in bringing this vision to life. We are committed to recruiting and supporting exceptional teachers who share our values and dedication to student success. Their passion, combined with our diverse course offerings, provides students with an engaging and supportive environment to explore their interests and talents.
Hampton Roads Academy is more than a school—it’s a community. We believe in fostering connections that enrich the student experience and promote a lifelong sense of responsibility to the broader community. By connecting with local organizations, alumni and parents, HRA provides students with service-learning opportunities that instill empathy, intellectual independence and global citizenship.
Our alumni network is an integral part of our school community, serving as mentors, supporters and role models for our current students. By maintaining strong relationships with former students, we create an interconnected community that lasts long after graduation.
We understand that maintaining an exceptional school requires careful stewardship of resources. Through strong enrollment management, philanthropy and strategic resource allocation, Hampton Roads Academy continues to uphold its mission while evolving to meet the needs of tomorrow’s students. With an eye toward sustainability, we continually update our facilities, ensuring that our campus remains a vibrant environment for learning, creativity and collaboration.
Our recent campus additions, such as the Mary and Larry Pope Dining Hall and the Hydroponics Lab, are part of our long-term vision. We continuously assess and upgrade our facilities to meet the diverse needs of our students, from state-of-the-art science labs to inviting spaces for arts and athletics.
At Hampton Roads Academy, we value diversity and inclusion as essential to our educational mission. We strive to create a safe, inclusive and supportive community where all students feel valued and empowered. By incorporating diverse perspectives into our curriculum and programming, we prepare our students to be compassionate and socially responsible leaders.
Hampton Roads Academy has been an educational leader in our region for over six decades, adapting to meet the needs of each new generation. From our rigorous academic programs to our emphasis on character development, Hampton Roads Academy is dedicated to preparing students for a dynamic and evolving world. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a premier venue for a variety of athletic events, benefitting not only HRA but also the surrounding community. With its upgraded features, the complex is set to host Middle School Cross Country meets, providing a much-needed competitive space for four local schools that currently lack high school-level facilities.
Jay Lasley, Head of School, expressed the significance of this upgrade, stating, “The upgrade to our track and field complex is about much more than enhancing our campus; it’s about fostering community spirit and expanding youth sports opportunities across the region.” This vision reflects HRA’s commitment to nurturing young athletes and encouraging a lifelong passion for sports.
The TowneBank Track and Field Complex represents more than just a physical upgrade; it symbolizes a strengthening of community ties. HRA extends its heartfelt gratitude to TowneBank, whose generous support made this transformative project possible. TowneBank has a long-standing commitment to education and community development, and this partnership showcases their dedication to creating opportunities for our youth.
The completion of this complex will allow HRA to host not only its own varsity-level track and field events but also attract regional competitions. The facility is designed to be a hub for athletic activity, drawing families and athletes from across the region. This investment in HRA’s infrastructure emphasizes the importance of community engagement in fostering a vibrant athletic culture.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature insights from HRA alumnus Mike Fisher, Class of 1986, who has been actively involved in this project. Fisher’s dedication to leadership and teamwork serves as an inspiration to current students. He will share his thoughts on the significance of caring for one another in the pursuit of athletic success: “Leaders care about people. They put the needs of others above their own. Offer to do the extra sprints with the teammate that is struggling in practice. Care enough to be honest, but also care enough to roll up their sleeves and help.”
Fisher’s involvement in this endeavor reinforces HRA’s values of leadership, teamwork and community. His message encourages current and future students to embrace their passion for sports while developing their leadership skills, much like he did during his time at HRA.
The TowneBank Track and Field Complex is set to become a cherished venue for countless athletic events and competitions. This facility will create lasting memories for student-athletes, coaches and families. From Middle School Cross Country meets to varsity competitions, the complex will play a pivotal role in shaping the athletic experiences of HRA students and the community.

As an active trustee and alumnus, Thad was instrumental in advocating for the school, especially in the revitalization of Navigator football. Whether cheering from the sidelines or working behind the scenes, his love for HRA’s athletic programs was evident in all he did. In recognition of his steadfast dedication to sports, Thad was recently inducted into the HRA Athletic Hall of Fame, an honor that stands as a tribute to his lifelong commitment to HRA’s student-athletes and athletic legacy. His contributions, both on and off the field, will continue to inspire future generations.
Born on August 29, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee, Thad Shelly was the son of Beverly Agnew Haskins and the late Thaddeus Rubel Shelly Jr. His family later moved to Newport News, Virginia, where his journey with Hampton Roads Academy began. After graduating from HRA in 1971, Thad went on to Hampden-Sydney College, earning his BA in Economics in 1975. His passion for education continued as he pursued an MBA in Finance from the Mason School of Business at The College of William & Mary in 1984, thanks to the encouragement of his wife, Helen Totty Edwards.
Thad Shelly’s career in wealth management was nothing short of remarkable. After obtaining his MBA, he embarked on a journey that saw him take on leadership roles at prestigious institutions like Goldman Sachs, Legg Mason, Bessemer Trust, Lazard and Tiedemann Advisors. His expertise in finance earned him a distinguished reputation in the industry, but no matter where his career took him, Thad’s heart remained with HRA.
Throughout his life, Thad Shelly exemplified the qualities of leadership and mentorship. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he dedicated countless hours to various advisory boards, including those at Hampton Roads Academy, The College of William & Mary Business School, Johns Hopkins University Heart and Vascular Institute and Hampden-Sydney College. Thad’s leadership wasn’t limited to boardrooms and classrooms—he also served as a coach, guiding teams at the college, high school and youth levels, including his own sons’ football teams in Severna Park, Maryland. Through coaching, Thad imparted lessons of teamwork, discipline and perseverance, helping countless young athletes reach their potential.
Despite his professional success and leadership roles, Thad Shelly was a family man at heart. In June of 1982, Thad married Totty, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and shared experiences. Their life took them to various locations along the East Coast, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and Florida, but their favorite place was their home on the Rappahannock River in Deltaville, Virginia. Summers spent on the water with family and friends were among Thad’s most cherished moments. Whether boating, playing golf, or simply enjoying a cigar on the porch, Thad treasured these times of relaxation and connection with loved ones.
Thad Shelly’s dedication to HRA, his family and his community was matched only by his dedication to excellence in all aspects of his life. His recent induction into the HRA Athletic Hall of Fame was a fitting recognition of his many contributions to the school’s athletic programs. But his legacy goes far beyond accolades and titles. Thad’s unwavering support for Hampton Roads Academy, his tireless efforts to foster leadership and education and his boundless enthusiasm for the school’s sports programs will leave a lasting impact on HRA’s community.
As we reflect on Thad Shelly’s life, we honor the incredible legacy he leaves behind. His influence on Hampton Roads Academy extends beyond his years of service on the Board of Trustees. His passion for education, leadership and mentorship will continue to shape the future of the school, inspiring generations of students and athletes for years to come.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Thad Shelly’s family during this difficult time, especially his beloved wife, Totty. Thad’s absence will be deeply felt, but his spirit, love for HRA and dedication to others will forever remain a part of the Academy’s history. We are incredibly grateful for all that Thad Shelly gave to Hampton Roads Academy, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Thad Shelly’s life was one of service, leadership and love—a life that touched countless people both within and beyond the HRA community. Though we have lost a great leader, mentor and friend, his legacy will endure, continuing to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
